- EXECUTIVE POSITION GOVERNOR PATAKI VETOES $1.8 BILLION FROM SENATE/ASSEMBLY BUDGET

On Friday the Governor axed $1.8 billion in spending increases and borrowing from the NYS Budget approved by the Legislature two weeks ago. Senate and Assembly leaders disagree with the Governor on projected revenues. Last year the Republications joined Democrats to restore 119 of Pataki’s vetoes. It is now up to the Legislature to decide to override any of the 195 vetoes in this year’s budget. In the end, Pataki left a $101.3 billion budget; his original budget proposal in the beginning of the year was $99.8 billion. The budget grows spending by 6%, more than twice the rate of inflation. OMRDD’s budget was not changed by the Legislature; therefore the vetoes should not have any direct effect on our services. However, according to the Governor’s figures a $434 million revenue/expense gap still exists in the budget, which he might try to close by cutting spending among state agencies.
