THE FIGHT’S NOT OVER YET: URGE CONGRESS TO REJECT ANY MEDICAID CUTS IN THE FY 2005 BUDGET

The U.S. Senate and House of Representatives will return to Washington, D.C. the week of April 19th. Before their recess, Senate and House budget conferees were unable to reach agreement on a conference report on the FY 2005 Congressional Budget Resolution, which is the budget blueprint determining spending for entitlement programs, discretionary programs, and tax cuts.

The Senate removed reconciliation language in its budget resolution that would have directed the Finance Committee to cut $11 billion from Medicaid programs. However, the House approved its budget resolution that includes reconciliation language directing the House Energy and Commerce Committee to make nearly $2.2 billion in entitlement cuts—already expected to be from Medicaid—in its FY 2005 budget resolution.

House and Senate conferees (listed below) were unable to iron out differences in the chambers’ two versions of the resolution before the recess. It is critical that your Senators and Representative hear from you upon their return to Capitol Hill. Urge them to reject any Medicaid cuts in the FY 2005 budget resolution. Ask them to accede to the bipartisan Senate position that protects Medicaid and quality supports and services for millions of people with disabilities, their families, and providers.

Budget Conferees: Senate: Nickles (R-OK); Dominici (R-NM); Grassley (R-IA); Gregg (R-NH); Conrad (D-ND); Hollings (D-SC); and Sarbanes (D-MD). House: Nussle (R-IA); Portman R-OH); and Spratt (D-SC).

TAKE ACTION IMMEDIATELY: Contact your U.S. Representative and both Senators Schumer and Clinton and ask them to “reject a budget conference report that includes any Medicaid cuts.” Urge them to retain the bipartisan Senate position that protects Medicaid and quality supports and services for millions of people with disabilities and their families and reject any cuts to Medicaid in the budget conference report.
