EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

WORC currently operates a Creative Arts Exploration Program for children ages three through twelve with various disabilities. This program provides 45 minutes of music and art exploration. WORC would like to enhance this program by including children without various disabilities into the program. The parents of the children who have participated in the program have requested this initiative. Including children without disabilities will offer a more natural inclusive environment. At the same time, there is a learning opportunity for natural integrative peer relationships leading to an understanding of children with disabilities.

The Creative Arts Exploration Program will operate Tuesday through Friday 4:15pm through 6:00pm. The groups will be offered from September through June. The program will provide support to forty children per week. Each day there will be a group of ten children, which will include three to four children without disabilities. Children will have the opportunity to participate in the music or art group, and/or both.

The Creative Arts Exploration Program utilizes music and art expression to increase and promote a child’s awareness of self and others. Each group session curriculum will offer an opportunity to focus and gain better understanding of the participants emotions, self esteem, expression of innate abilities, expressive learning, and social boundaries.

The groups are facilitated by a Master’s level music and art therapist. The process of evaluating and measuring the individual progress of each child is accomplished through direct observation during every session. Therapists document level of participation and activity completed for each individual by written case notes which monitor progression towards agreed upon persons centered plan.
