Program Description
As a direct support professional, you negotiate many relationships – with consumers and their families, with your co-workers, with supervisors, with other professionals who play a role in the consumer’s lives. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to establishing ethical workplace relationships, so where do we begin? Setting a tone of professional warmth and engagement with consumers and other staff depends on learning how to manage your own personal information and experiences in a workplace setting, and respecting the lines are that separate personal from professional in ‘friendly’ relationships with consumers and colleagues.
Session Highlights
This very interactive session will explore real-life scenarios – the situations we face every day when we make and maintain relationships with consumers and co-workers. We will introduce and practice an approach to understanding and adjusting workplace boundaries that respects the needs and preferences of consumers, the setting and circumstances, legal and ethical considerations and your personal style and habits in finding and maintaining that elusive “line”.
About the Presenter
Meghan Johnston has worked with direct support professionals, managers, executive staff and boards of directors as a coach, trainer, facilitator and consultant since 1998. Her practice focuses on ethical decision-making, corporate compliance, governance, strategic planning, staff recruitment and retention and other issues that challenge nonprofits.
