· FMAP INCREASE IN SECOND STIMULUS PACKAGE

The Senate Appropriations Committee was scheduled to begin work on a Second Emergency FY 2008 Supplemental Appropriations bill on July 22. This bill will primarily fund continuing costs of recent and new disaster recovery efforts as well as road and bridge repairs. There is a possibility that provisions could be added to this bill that would fund programs of interest to the disability community, such as the Federal Medical Assistance Percentage (FMAP).
The House Democratic leadership wants to complete action on the stimulus in September before Congress adjourns for the rest of the year. The House Energy and Commerce Committee on Tuesday will hold a hearing on H. R. 5268, introduced by Health Subcommittee Chair Pallone (D-NJ) and King (R-NY). The bill would give states temporary increase in Federal support for Medicaid (FMAP increase) and could be incorporated into a stimulus package. Representative King is seeking Republican support for a Dear Colleague letter to Speaker Pelosi (D-CA) and Leader Boehner (R-OH). The letter urges them to provide state fiscal relief-including a temporary increase in FMAP. See if your Representative is on the target list to sign on.
