Meet with your State Legislators in the Home District
On January 7, 2010, individuals with disabilities, parents, family members and direct support professionals will meet with their State Legislators in their districts to educate, inform and advocate. This is a joint effort by NYSACRA, the Inter Agency Council, the Long Island Alliance, NYSRA, CP of New York State, NYSARC, DDAWNY.
We expect the Governor to deliver the proposed 2010-11 Executive Budget to the State Legislature on January 19, 2010. Given New York State's weak economic forecast, we anticipate further reductions as we approach the next fiscal year. Therefore, it is important for your State Legislators to understand the firsthand perspective of how developmental disability services positively impact your lives.
Provider agencies are encouraged to take the lead and coordinate this effort. Please pass along the SAVE THE DATE to individuals with disabilities, parents, family members and direct support professionals.
We have also put together a brief tip sheet with contact information for statewide associations in the event that we may assist you further.
The associations will also provide additional materials which include talking points for your meetings with State Legislators.
We anticipate the proposed 2010-11 Executive Budget will pose us with challenges. Therefore, advocacy efforts are important and January 7th provides us with timely opportunity to meet with State Legislators.
This event in the State Legislative Districts compliments the NYSACRA LEGISLATIVE DAY on January 26th in terms of timing. On January 26th, the proposed 2010-11 Executive Budget will have already been released and we will have opportunities to meet with State Legislators in their Albany Offices to advocate on the implications of the budget.
