· STATEWIDE ADVOCACY DAY IS NEXT WEEK

On January 7, 2010, individuals with disabilities, parents, family members and direct support professionals will meet with their State Legislators, in the home district, to educate, inform and advocate. This is a joint effort by NYSACRA, the InterAgency Council, the Long Island Alliance, NYSRA, CP of New York State, NYSARC, DDAWNY, the Capital District Coalition, the Coalition of Families for Direct Support Workers and the NYS Catholic Conference.
Statewide Advocacy Day is a timely event as meetings will be held with State Legislators the day following the Governor's State of the State Address on January 6th and just prior to the release of the proposed 2010-11 Executive Budget on January 19th. Statewide Advocacy Day provides us with the real opportunity to inform State Legislators on how developmental disability services positively impact people's lives.
To obtain contact information to schedule meetings with State Legislators in their District Offices, please log on to NYSACRA's Action and Education Center at www.nysacra.org or the Assembly and Senate websites at www.assembly.state.ny.us and www.nysenate.gov
The following materials have been crafted to assist parents, family members and direct support professionals with preparation for meetings with State Legislators: Talking Points which outline general points participants may wish to make during meetings; Briefing Outline which provides the main points, potential goals and important tips for a successful meeting; Background Paper for participants which includes an overview of the State Budget Process, the current economic climate and critical budget issues for individuals with disabilities and the field; and a "Leave Document" to provide to the State Legislator at the close of the meeting.
Individual associations/agencies are coordinating Advocacy Day efforts.
