LEGISLATIVE DAY 2009

NYS Capitol

Tuesday, January 27, 2009

What is Legislative Day?

Over 250 Agency Representatives, Parents, People with Disabilities, Board Members and Direct Support Staff will carry our message to the members of the Legislature on January 27, 2009.

Each Agency sends a "Team" to Albany.  This Team can consist of an administrator, residence director, direct support staff,  parent and/or consumer.  A well rounded team includes about three to five people.  You may send more than one team to Legislative Day if you have multiple legislators to see.

Each Agency is responsible for its own lodging, however, NYSACRA has obtained groups rates at area hotels.

NYSACRA will make your Legislative appointments for you.

The day begins at 7:15 a.m. in  Meeting Room 6 of the Empire State Plaza with a continental breakfast.  Your Legislators have been invited to provide you with an additional opportunity to meet with them.

The teams from NYSACRA member agencies visit their legislators in the Legislative Office Building (LOB) and ask them to support the Governor’s proposed OMRDD budget and to assist in the recruitment and retention of the Direct Support Workforce, among other issues.

You will be provided detailed issue papers and other handouts necessary when you arrive in Albany.  An Agenda is provided in advance as well as driving & parking instructions.

Lunch is on your own.

The average day is over shortly after lunch, but that depends on how many Legislators you wish to see and how big your team is.

You will be handing out copies of the Direct Support Profiles that various agencies have provided us.  If you have not yet submitted one, please contact Joe Macbeth.

NYSACRA wants Direct Support Professionals to receive a wage commensurate with the complexity of their work, so they can continue to support and nurture the lives of individuals with disabilities.
